Iron Science Teacher Competition 2006

Submitted by admin on 21 September, 2006 - 5:01pm. Categories: Messages

A public service announcement:

IRON SCIENCE TEACHER COMPETITION 2006

The inaugural Iron Science Teacher Competition was held in November 2005. It was also one of several activities held in commemoration of the International Year of Physics 2005 and the Centenary of Albert Einstein’s Annus Mirabilis (1905, the year in which he published his seminal papers). With the continued support of the Ministry of Education, the second running of this competition will be held on 15 November 2006.

Our Iron Science Competition is based on the very popular Iron Science Teacher programme run by the Exploratorium in San Francisco, USA. Their competition is based on the popular Japanese cooking game show, the“Iron Chef”. Their contestants compete to give “the most entertaining and informative science lecture” a short period after being given a “secret ingredient”. Past examples of the secret ingredient were dry ice, candles, ping pong balls, marbles, baking soda, tennis balls, a fruitcake, CDs, etc. That is, anything can be designated a secret ingredient.

Hi all fellow trainee teachers!
I hope everyone is still alive and kicking!
The 9th week of practicum is almost over, and the 10th week would also fly by in a while.

Its been quiet in this network, so i've decided to make some noise. Would like to thank the ppl managing this Learning Centre as well as everyone who has contributed.

I've benefitted alot from the shared resources here, but i am also guilty of not posting my materials. (oops). I will be posting my ppt slides soon (let me have some time to tidy up), hopefully it will benefit others as well.

I hope more of u will share ur materials too. =)

See u all at QCP & QCM again soon!

Best Regards, Rachel Chng

Impression of the first few days of practicum

Dear all,

How were your first days of practicum? For someone like me, who unfortunately never went through the school experience, I have had a culture shock. Just wondering whether anyone else is grappling with the issue of classroom management vs trying out innovative pedagogy. I've found that teachers are generally spending a huge amount of time trying to manage their classes (in which I'm referring to loud or disruptive students), and as a result have very little time to actually teach. Is anyone else facing this challenge too?

A side issue is how personal should our messages be, given that this is a public website. I wouldn't want to be the next "blogger incident". What do you think?

Please Post!

To the July 2005 PGDE trainees, I hope you're enjoying your first week of practicum. Since we're going to have to start churning out lesson plans like machines from next week onwards, this is a gentle reminder to everyone to make use of this online resource so that we can all breathe a little easier.

Please post more lesson plans that you might have made or modified this past semester, as well as test papers or any other resources you'd be kind enough to share.

Also, feel free to make use of the community features, such as message posting (e.g. to request for help in planning specific lessons, or just ideas for trigger activities), and comments (e.g. how you made use of someone's particular lesson plan).

As always, we're looking to improve the site, so any feedback is welcome.

Thanks, and good luck!

Upload of more material and Moodle

Since the bandwidth of the site is rather low, we can accept big files that you want to preserve and share with others such as video demonstrations or ICT packages. Don't try to upload it yourself though, because it will fail. For files above 2MB in size, contact us directly, and we'll help you get the file uploaded by other means.

Also, Han Pin was interested in a Moodle site to host his ICT Moodle package and thought others might like to use it too, so we've created a Moodle site. Just follow the link that appears on the left-hand column.

Over there, you'll need to sign up for a separate account from this site. And then drop us an email to get the administrative rights to create courses. We are not as sophisticated as NIE's Moodle site http://lst.servy.net/moodle/. On the other hand, we'll host your Moodle site for as long as you want, so you can incorporate the site for your practicum too.

We hope you find the services here useful :) Don't hesitate to feedback to us if you need help or greater ICT functionality.
