SingaporeTeachersLearningCentre is a community website for the sharing of teaching resources. Started by the 2005 PGDE(SEC) NIE batch of trainee-teachers, it is filled with lesson plans and other resources created during our stay in NIE. We hope to continue providing a place for anyone to share their works of a similar nature.

Please Post!

To the July 2005 PGDE trainees, I hope you're enjoying your first week of practicum. Since we're going to have to start churning out lesson plans like machines from next week onwards, this is a gentle reminder to everyone to make use of this online resource so that we can all breathe a little easier.

Please post more lesson plans that you might have made or modified this past semester, as well as test papers or any other resources you'd be kind enough to share.

Also, feel free to make use of the community features, such as message posting (e.g. to request for help in planning specific lessons, or just ideas for trigger activities), and comments (e.g. how you made use of someone's particular lesson plan).

As always, we're looking to improve the site, so any feedback is welcome.

Thanks, and good luck!

The author gladly grants permission to anyone who wishes to reproduce the original works included in this lesson plan for non commercial purposes.

For those who are interested in why birds don't get electrocuted when they stand on the "live" conduit of the MRT tracks, here's the official reply from SMRT.

"There is an insulation material (PVC) covering the 3rd rail to prevent direct contact with the live 3rd rail. The PVC casing covers the top & vertical sides of the third rail. The bottom portion remains exposed for the current collector shoes of the train to slide along to draw traction current. The 3rd rail is supported at discrete intervals (approximately 6m apart) & held in place using 3rd rail insulators on arm brackets that are fastened to the track sleeper."

We will not be copying over material from previous NIE batches onto this site. Instead, you'll be able to access the wealth of material from our predecessors at Dr Yap's site: http://teachersportal.nie.edu.sg/kcyap/Physics2002/Index2002.htm.

There are a lot of lesson plans available catering for O Levels, A Levels and even lower secondary science.

In addition, there are also almost 30 videos of demonstrations. I am listing them below so that it can be searched by the search engine:

1. Surface Tension
1. Get Away
2. Make Way

Upload of more material and Moodle

Since the bandwidth of the site is rather low, we can accept big files that you want to preserve and share with others such as video demonstrations or ICT packages. Don't try to upload it yourself though, because it will fail. For files above 2MB in size, contact us directly, and we'll help you get the file uploaded by other means.

Also, Han Pin was interested in a Moodle site to host his ICT Moodle package and thought others might like to use it too, so we've created a Moodle site. Just follow the link that appears on the left-hand column.

Over there, you'll need to sign up for a separate account from this site. And then drop us an email to get the administrative rights to create courses. We are not as sophisticated as NIE's Moodle site http://lst.servy.net/moodle/. On the other hand, we'll host your Moodle site for as long as you want, so you can incorporate the site for your practicum too.

We hope you find the services here useful :) Don't hesitate to feedback to us if you need help or greater ICT functionality.

"Boiling With Ice" Video Demonstration

Submitted by admin on 13 December, 2005 - 7:43pm. Categories: Files: Lesson Plans, Videos | Thermal Properties of Matter

Created by Akmal and Yingjie for our Physics Continual Assessment Task. We demonstrated a flask of water boiling by rubbing it with ice.

The file is quite large, so download it only if you have a broadband connection and you are willing to wait around 15 - 60 minutes. Otherwise, you can always contact either of us to get a copy of this video by other means.

Electricity ICT Lesson

Submitted by akmal on 13 December, 2005 - 1:31am. Categories: Current Electricity | Files: Lesson Plans, Videos

Created by Akmal and Yingjie for our ICT module. We made a website which students explore in a games setting while filling up a worksheet. No special software is needed; just a good browser (meaning Mozilla-based or IE6+). Just unpack the zip file and point your browser to the index.html page.

Message us if you have any problems.
